Manchester City Confirm the Signing of Norwegian Midfield Prodigy Sverre Nypan

Sverre Nypan Joins as City's Fifth Summer Signing
    By FNR2 weeks ago

Manchester-city have officially announced the signing of Sverre Nypan, completing their fifth addition of the 2025 summer transfer window. The highly-rated Norwegian midfielder joins from Rosenborg BK for a reported fee of £12.5 million, with no add-ons or sell-on clauses included in the deal.

At just 18 years old, Nypan brings a wealth of experience for his age. He made his senior debut for Rosenborg at the age of 15 and has since amassed 70 first-team appearances, registering 14 goals and 11 assists. His versatility has been a standout trait — while primarily a central midfielder, he is also capable of playing in more advanced roles, on the flanks, or even as a forward, thanks to his tactical intelligence and spatial awareness.

A Talent in High Demand Across Europe

Nypan has long been on the radar of top European clubs. Earlier this year, he was heavily linked with moves to Arsenal and Aston Villa, with reports suggesting Villa were close to sealing a deal before City re-entered the picture. The teenager was even spotted in the Etihad Stadium’s corporate box during a match against Chelsea, seated alongside his family and agent Rafaela Pimenta, as a guest of Erling Haaland — fueling speculation of his City move.

Ultimately, it was Manchester City’s long-term project and development pathway that convinced Nypan to choose the Etihad. The midfielder has signed a five-year contract that runs until the summer of 2030.

Nypan’s First Words as a City Player

Speaking after completing the move, Nypan expressed his excitement:

“I am incredibly happy and proud to have joined Manchester City. It’s a dream for any young footballer to become part of this club and to join such a group of world-class talent.”

“I’m still very young with a lot to learn, but the chance to be coached by Pep Guardiola, the best manager in the world, will only help me to become a better player.”

He also acknowledged the growing connection between Norwegian footballers and the club:

“There is already a special connection between Norway and Manchester City through Erling Haaland and Oscar Bobb, and I am very proud to have become the latest Norwegian player to join the club.”

City’s Director of Football Praises the Signing

City’s Director of Football, Hugo Viana, shared his thoughts on the acquisition:

“Sverre is an exciting young player that the club has been monitoring for some time. He already possesses a number of standout qualities, and at just 18, we believe he’ll only continue to improve.”

“We’re confident he will become an important asset for Manchester City in the years ahead, and we’ll support him throughout his development.”

Immediate Future: Loan Likely, But Not Confirmed

While Nypan has joined the club with high expectations, his immediate future may lie away from the Etihad. According to Tyrone Marshall of the Manchester Evening News, the midfielder is expected to go out on loan for the 2025/26 season, although a destination has not yet been decided.

For now, Nypan is due to report to pre-season training with the first team on Monday, July 28, and may feature in City’s pre-season friendly against Palermo in Italy on Saturday, August 9.

Should no loan be arranged by the close of the transfer window, reports from The Independent suggest Nypan could remain part of Guardiola’s senior squad for the upcoming campaign.

City’s Summer Transfer Activity So Far

Nypan becomes Manchester City’s fifth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of:

    • Rayan Ait-Nouri (left-back)
    • Rayan Cherki (winger)
    • Tijjani Reijnders (midfielder)
    • Marcus Bettinelli (goalkeeper, third-choice)

Further transfer business will depend on potential departures, with key decisions still to be made on the futures of Ederson, Jack Grealish, James McAtee, Ilkay Gundogan, and others.
