Atlético Madrid and Saúl Ñíguez Part Ways After 15 Iconic Years

    By FNR1 week ago
    Saúl Ñíguez

After more than a decade and a half of dedication, Atlético de Madrid and Saúl Ñíguez have mutually agreed to part ways, officially ending the midfielder’s long-standing chapter with the club.

Saúl will now embark on a new journey with Brazilian giants Flamengo, marking the next stage of his professional career.

Hailing from Elche, Saúl joined the Atlético academy in 2008 and rose through the ranks to become a club icon. Since making his first-team debut in 2012, he has accumulated 427 appearances, 48 goals, and six major trophies, earning his place as the ninth most-capped player in club history. He also had loan spells at Rayo Vallecano, Chelsea, and Sevilla, leaving his mark across Europe before playing his final game in red and white with a victory in San Sebastián.

Club President Enrique Cerezo paid tribute to Saúl’s legacy, saying:

“We are deeply grateful for his more than 15 years of commitment to Atlético, from the academy to the first team. He joined us as a talented youngster and departs as a club legend. With over 400 appearances, countless goals, assists, and unforgettable moments, Saúl will forever be a part of our history.”

Cerezo concluded with warm words for the future:

“We wish him and his family all the best in this new chapter. This club will always be his home.”
